The Basic Home Repair: Home Improvement DVD is designed to provide complete details and lessons on home repair topics including energy conservation, home security, replacing a faucet, sweating copper pipes, replacing toilets, unclogging drain clogs, replacing the caulk on a tub, replacing lighting fixtures, repairing broken lamps, replacing tiles that are cracked and broken and replacing broken or clogged shower heads.
Basic Home Repair: Home Improvement encompasses a wide variety of different repairs that the average home owner is going to have to deal with in his or her lifetime. It is designed to give home owners an easy way to deal with small repairs, informing savvy home repair people of ways to save money while resolving these problems. Each problem is presented with step by step instructions that address these minor and more challenging repairs which become prevalent in every home at some point in time. The instructions that are included with this DVD are actually even printable right off of your computer, if your computer is capable of reading DVDs.
Most of these repairs are based on a home improvement show that aired during the mid 80s. While this DVD does not provide a lot of insight into newer techniques and tools, it is still an excellent reference tool for anyone looking to make basic home repairs to lighting fixtures, plumbing, stuck drains and other parts of the house that can often fall into basic disrepair.

So whether you are looking for assistance on un-sticking a clogged drain or replacing a shower head, replacing a toilet, replacing the caulking on a bathtub or other bathroom fixture or fixing a copper pipe that is leaking or sweating, there is plenty of useful information to find within this useful DVD, and the printable directions that it offers for each project within. Plumbing problems can be costly, but most of the time, they are relatively easy to fix, especially if you know what you’re doing. You can save thousands of dollars every year by learning how to be your own plumber and you’ll be gaining knowledge that can help you, especially in an emergency. Here are some tips on how to tackle the most common plumbing problems that homeowners experience.
First, you will need to get some solid plumbing books or DVDs that will walk you through the most common jobs. You can refer to these if you get stuck during a project. Having these books on hand can really make a difference, especially when you are under the wire. If you already know how to do basic plumbing, you’re just one step ahead. Try to get a variety of different books that cover not only basic pipe and drain issues, but also how to fix toilets and fixtures to make sure you have a well rounded library.
Next, you will need to make sure that you have the right tools on hand for the job. Here’s what we recommend: a variety of different pipe wrenches, appropriately sized for your house’s plumbing. It sounds simple, but many people find out too late that they don’t have the right wrench on hand during an emergency. It is also a good idea to purchase what is called a plumber’s snake. These are tools that can be used to quickly unclog a drain and they are very helpful.
It is also a good idea to have a variety of caulks, sealants and silicone on hand. These are very helpful when it comes to fixing a leak, or putting in new tile. Make sure that they are all properly closed so that you don’t end up with a bunch of dried out tubes when you really need them. Next, you should have a good supply of pipe fittings for your different pipes throughout the house. The hardware store will have a variety of elbow joints, end caps and other things that you will need. Measure your pipes and get everything that you need.
You should also keep a supply of drain cleaner, empty buckets, gloves and other small items that are usually required during a repair session. Make sure your tool box contains a propane blow torch, a variety of pliers and wrenches and anything else that your house may require. Keep all of your tools in a safe, dry place where they can be easily accessed. That way, when something does happen, you’ll be able to grab your stuff and get right to work.
Finally, it is a good idea to practice your skills from time to time, so that they don’t get rusty. If you have an extra bathroom, you can use this to try fixing a leak, cleaning out a drain or replacing the workings of your toilet. You’ll stay fresh and you’ll be ready to handle anything that comes your way.

If you have ever looked at a sink, a lamp or anything in your house and wondered how does that work this book has your answers. Any homeowner can benefit from learning more about how specific appliances and fixtures work, but there are not many resources that put it all into one easy to read format. The book, How Your House Work has changed all that and we were very excited to get a chance to review this book.
By far, this is the most exhaustive resource we have ever come across on the interior of a house and everything in it. The first chapter covers the plumbing system of a home, discussing everything from your basic drain, toilets and showers. Every imaginable kind of drain is covered, and just about every fixture you could have in your house as well. The illustrations do a great job of making all the instructions very clear and they were very easy to follow.
The second chapter on wiring demystifies your home’s electrical system and explains in easy to understand terms how everything is powered in your home. From light switches to the circuit box, you’ll have a clearer understanding of just what goes on when you flip that switch and how power gets back to the lamp. We found this section absolutely fascinating.
Chapters three and four cover home heating and cooling, and offer rare insight into how everything works together for climate control. The chapter on air quality is also a must read and provides life saving information on how to tell when your home’s air quality may be compromised. Chapter six goes into detail on every home appliance known to man and was worth the cost of the book alone. Whether you consistently have trouble with your appliances or just want to know more about what goes on inside, this is truly the best guide.
Chapter seven and eight get into more structural items in your home, such as doors, windows, framing and foundations. You’ll be learning a ton about how your house holds itself up, how to find problem areas in your foundation and many other valuable tips. While it may not be a book that everyone would sit down and read in one sitting, it is a great reference tool and is perfect for the curious.
We highly recommend How Your House Works not only to homeowners, but also to renters that are interested in keeping their properties well maintained and maybe one day getting into home ownership. It’s easy to feel like an expert after you read this book and you’ll find plenty of ways to impress friends and family with your newly acquired knowledge. From the top notch illustrations to the way everything was presented, this is the absolute best book we have read on the subject. Makes a great housewarming gift, but don’t forget to get a copy for yourself. This is one book that really should be read.
