The Basics of Drilling 4

Holding your Bits: If you want to keep your drill bits from bumping into one another and other tools, which could cost them their cutting edge in the process, then you should absolutely avoid storing them in any loose way. Instead, what you can do is either buy a bit holder from the hardware store for a few dollars, or you can easily crate your own improvised solution as needed as well. For example, you can buy a block of wood, label spots for each bit and then drill holes that the bits can be fit into. If you always make sure that your bits are being kept in their proper places within your improvised or purchased holder, then you can always make sure that your drill bits are not only easy to find but also always kept nice and sharp for you.
Wood Pitch: When a bit is used on wood that is resinous in nature, it can be coated with what is known as wood pitch. If the wood pitch is ever allowed to build up, then the pitch is going to be allowed to dull the integrity of the bit. In order to clean a bit that has been marred as a result of exposure to wood pitch, you should lay the bit out on newspaper and then spray it with an oven cleaning product. If you want to contain the fumes, then you can put the bit inside a ziplock plastic back and then do the spraying. Allow the drill bi to soak in the cleaning material for a period of 20 minutes or so and then use a clean rag to wipe the wood pitch away.
Handy use for Cork: You can protect the business end of expensive bits like spade bits, Forstner bits and brad point bits by simply screwing a small piece of cork onto each of the bits' ends. The cork, which should have an overall diameter that is slightly larger than the bit itself, is going to protect the lead in point of the bit as well as the bit's cutting spurs.
Create a Holder for your Drills: A quart sized plastic jug actually makes an excellent drill holder. You would want to cut the bottom of the jug off at an angle, and then take off the top of the jug as well. Turn the cut open jug upside down and attach it to the wall like a holster for your drills. Now you can slide your drills into handy dandy power tool holders that likely did not cost you anything. Another great way to make a holder for power tools is going to be to use 4 inch diameter PVP pining that is 8 inches in length, cutting a notch in the rim at the top in order to accommodate the handle for the tool.
