Toilet Troubleshooting

toiletIn homes, the most common type of toilet is one that consists of a tank and a bowl, be they a single piece, or separate tank and bowl. These are not the only toilets however. Some toilets instead of having a tank, use a exposed flushing mechanism that is often referred to as a flushometer that comes out of the toilet bowl and then directly into the wall. Flushometers can be installed either as fully exposed units, or be concealed behind the wall.

In general, flushometer style toilets are used in commercial applications, businesses, schools, etc., places where a more durable flushing mechanism is desired. Making repairs to these types of mechanisms is generally not needed as often, but when it is, consultation of the manufacturer may be needed to be sure you are getting the right parts and looking in the right areas for repairing. Since most applications of these types of units are manufactured by either Delany or Sloan, we carry many parts for these types of valves.

Troubleshooting a Constantly Running Toilet

The most commonly found type of toilet has a tank and a bowl, some of which are separate and others of which are connected.

If you have the type of toilet with a tank, then there are three main problems that might be the cause if you are dealing with a toilet that is running and running and running.

  • There might be a problem relating to the flush valve.
  • There might be a problem relating to the fill valve.
  • There might be a loose assembly of the flush lever.

It is typically going to be easy enough for you to determine if one or any of these things happen to be the issue. The way that you can do this is by looking right inside of the tank, and then flushing while you are peering inside. Make sure that you are taking special precautions upon removing the tank lid, as they can be fragile, slippery and heavy all at once.

Let the water exit out into the bowl, and then watch as the tank begins to refill again. If the flapper or the flush ball is not stopping the water from exiting out into the bowl because it is not seating down the way it is meant to into the flush valve, sealing the water in the tank, then you either have a flapper or flush ball problem on your hands, a flush valve assembly problem or a problem with your flush level assembly.

If the flapper or the flush ball does seal the flush valve properly but there is water still filling into the tank continuously, then the problem may be the fact that the fill valve is letting your tank fill over with water.
