The best way to save money around the home is to tackle the home repair items yourself. Large jobs may be better suited for professionals, but there are plenty of tasks that can be tackled. The best way to be prepared is to have a well equipped tool chest. However, knowing what tools are good to have on hand can be difficult, so here are a few items that are good to have on hand.
The first essential is a good library. At home improvement stores and bookstores, there are numerous tomes on repairing different areas of the home. There are many to choose from, so you should pick those that contain fully illustrated instructions that you can find helpful and can follow with some ease. There are many books on many topics, so knowing which ones to get can be difficult. It is usually best to buy the books as you need them, but some household repairs require immediate attention. So it is best to start out with books on plumbing, electrical systems and a general quick fix book. Make sure that you fully understand the dangers implicit with such repairs, before the emergency occurs.
Moving on to the actual tools to have on hand, a good set to have handy is one of those general tool sets that come in the plastic case. The tool kit should have a hammer, screwdrivers of different kinds, wrenches and pliers. Make sure to buy from a reputable department store or tool store, these tools should be the highest quality that you can afford. You will not be using these as much as a mechanic, but they will be used over the course of several years and if they should break in the middle of a repair, you'll be out of luck. Be sure to buy a can of rust protectant, and spray the business end of the tool to prevent rust from forming. Other items that can be handy to have on hand include a power drill or rotary tool, along with a set of drill bits. A tape measure is also a key item to have, as for many projects large and small, the tape measure is valuable.
Other than these items, there are a few items which would be good to have, but can wait until you need them. These include a saw of some kind, good for home usage in cutting wood and soft materials. A hack saw can aid in the cutting of harder woods and metals. For those redecorating, it is a good idea to set aside a small paint bucket with a small brush should be kept in case of later wall repair. Many other tools that may be needed will be fleshed out as you read solutions to problems you encounter. There are a countless number of things to do around the home as a DIY project, in many cases repair work, but in all cases, there is a tool that is needed to get the job done, and you should be prepared should the need arise.
