Understanding how Caulk Works
October 20th, 2009 | Handy Man, Tools
Caulk is a material that is use4d as a filler for cracks and seams as well as other types of openings. Calk is used with buildings as well as other construction related projects that require for seams and other openings to be closed.
What is caulk made out of?
Caulk is capable of being found in hardware stores, home improvement centers and paint stores. It is typically available in a tube form that does not look much unlike a tube of toothpaste. Caulk is made out of polyurethane, silicone or acrylic materials. Different types of caulk are indicated for different purposes. Choosing the right material of caulk for your purpose is going to be vitally important because caulk needs to create a waterproof seal in order for it to be effective.
What is caulk responsible for doing?
Caulk is responsible for creating a waterproofed seal between two different spaces. When it is applied properly, the caulk is responsible for filling an empty area that has become exposed, and then the caulk expands as it dries in order to create a seal. The seal is responsible for creating a sturdy barrier that is capable of preventing materials, liquid and other things from passing through the hole or crack that was previous there. Some of the things that can be prevented from passing through when caulk is properly applied includes wind, rain, insects and any other unwanted types of intrusions that may be capable of invading a structure. The most common places that you may end up wanting to apply this caulk substance includes in buildings, in homes and on boats.
So how is caulk used?
What you do, is you apply the caulk to a seam or a crack to serve as a sealant. The tool that is used in order to achieve this is known as a caulking gun. The caulking gun tool makes it possible for the user to control exactly how the caulk is going to be applied, and this makes sure that the right amount of caulk is used, nothing more and nothing less. Caulk is also capable of being used as a fire retardant material. What a fire retardant material is, is a material that is non-combustible and therefore is able to slow the growth or the spread of flames if a fire should happen to occur.
This means that caulk is an excellent source of protection for homes and buildings should a fire ever break out. Caulk is also used to seal the space between bathroom appliances and tiles, such as around the bathtub, beneath the toilet and around the sink in order to create a waterproof seal and keep water from seeping through.
