A stump grinder is a piece of equipment used specifically for removing the remnants of a stump. Once a tree is cut down, inevitably a stump remains and no one wants to leave the stump in place. A stump can be left to rot away if you want to cover it with soil and simply wait him. Eventually it will be soft enough that you can dig it out or scrape it away because the wood will rot. A tiny stump can be rotted away in this fashion over several months. Larger tree stumps will take years.
There are chemicals you can buy and put into drilled holes in a tree stump that will help it to rot faster. This can take just a few months. You won't be able just to shovel the stump away, however. Usually you have to burn what's left of the stump and that's not always a practical solution, depending on the burning laws in your area.
The fastest way to remove the stump is with a stump grinder. You can hire a contractor who will come with the equipment and remove the stump very quickly for you or you can rent one. Another option is that if you happen to have something like a skidsteer loader or small tractor, you may be able to rent or purchase a stump grinding attachment for it. A small stump grinder can be a small hand-operated piece of equipment about the size of a push mower or it can be a heavy-duty piece of equipment like a huge lawn tractor.
A stump grinder works thanks to a large disk that spins and is covered in carbide steel teeth. The steel grinds away the stump, mulching the wood as it goes. Large tree stumps typically have to be cut down as close to the ground as possible with a chainsaw before a stump grinder can be used. When using a stump grinder, you don't stop when you reach the ground. The stump is ground down to the surface of the dirt and then the grinder is used to go even deeper, usually up to a foot. That grinds the roots of the tree, as well. If you use a stump grinder and you do it correctly, you can even plant where the stump used to be because of the deep root mulching.
A stump grinder is a fuel-powered piece of equipment in which the smaller ones are designed for smaller tree stumps while the larger ones that can be the size of a small car or truck are designed for huge stumps. The larger ones are typically used by tree professionals or contractors while the small, walk-behind models that are operated and held with a long handle are designed for homeowners. Safety precautions need to be taken when using a stump grinder such as protective eyewear, gloves and removal of anything in the nearby area that could be damaged. Because the stump grinder is chipping and grinding wood, chips may fly quite a distance so it's necessary to take precautions.
