Here are some tips for getting the most out of your use of epoxy.
How much material needs to be purchased? - A single gallon worth of epoxy is going to be capable of covering 12.8 feet square with a 1/8 inch thickness, or 6.4 feet square with a 1/4 inch thickness.
How much temperature is epoxy capable of taking at a maximum? - The maximum amount of a temperature that epoxy should take is around 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Epoxies are generally quite capable of withstanding high temperatures over short periods of time, but it is still recommended that you stay below 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
How should the area be prepared for the epoxy? - If you want to achieve the maximum level of adhesion, then you are going to want to remove all dirt, oil, paint, rust and water from the site. Make sure that you use a degreasing agent such as acetone or alcohol in order to remove the oil and the grease. You can take dirt, paint and rust away using sandpaper or a sander. Roughing up your surface is going to increase the ability for the epoxy to bond to the surface.
Can mixing and applying be done any more easily? - The best method for you to mix a paste epoxy is going to be to make use of a stiff knife along with a flat piece of wood. Mix the putties between your fingers. It is helpful for you to store your epoxy in a warmer area before you use it. If you need help applying the paste, try buying a palette knife from an art supply store.
Is epoxy capable of sticking to plastic? - Epoxy is actually capable of bonding to a wide variety of different surfaces, and one such surface is hard plastics. Plastic is unfortunately a broad term, and refers to a wide variety of different polymers. It is always best for you to spot check the bond you are attempting to create if you have any doubt and want to achieve the best possible results.
How fast are epoxies really capable of curing? - Epoxy is capable of curing quickly enough that there is a significant amount of strength within only about 3 hours. At 70 degrees Fahrenheit, the working time is approximately 15 minutes. It is still generally possible for you to reposition your work for about 45 minutes, though.
How should I clean up the epoxy? - Epoxy that has not yet been given a chance to cure can clean up pretty easily using soap and water or using denatured alcohol. Clothing that has been contaminated needs to be washed. If you are dealing with cured epoxy on the other hand, you should scrape, cut or remove the epoxy in layers using a good paint remover product.
