Wallpaper Tips for Installation
September 21st, 2009 | Handy Man, Install, Wallpaper, Walls
There are a lot of reasons to choose wallpaper over paint for the walls in your home. Wallpaper can add a real sense of class to a room with unique and eye-catching designs that a solid color of paint just can’t match. However, if you do opt for wallpaper you also have to consider that it’s more difficult to deal with. Most people have learned how to paint a room at some point in their lives, but fewer people understand how to hang wallpaper. If you want to go the do it yourself route then here are some wallpaper tips to help you with the tricky installation procedure.
The good news is that installing wallpaper isn’t especially difficult – it can just be frustrating at first. With the help of these wallpaper tips, you should be able to master the process in no time and get right to it. Before you do anything else though, you need to come up with a plan. Keep in mind that it will probably take you a couple of days to completely wallpaper an average sized room. You might want to give yourself a little extra time if you’re just learning how to do it.
One of the most important wallpaper tips is to make sure you take all the potential obstacles in a room into account. Bathrooms may seem like an easy place to wallpaper but you have to consider all the fixtures in the room that may get in the way. Even if it is a bigger project, you may want to learn how to wallpaper by starting with a bedroom or living room. These rooms are generally more straight forward with fewer little alcoves to trip you up.
Once you’re ready to begin, the first step is to get the walls ready for the wallpaper. It’s important to make sure that the walls are as even as possible. Nothing should be sticking out or recessed at all. Use spackle to fill in any holes and sand down anything that might be sticking out, then give all the walls a good cleaning. It’s important to take these wallpaper tips into account or else the installation will be a lot harder than it needs to be.
Once you actually start hanging the wallpaper, then there are a few other wallpaper tips to keep in mind as you go. Make sure you have a level and use it frequently to ensure that everything remains straight as an arrow. Another tip is to always work with a partner if at all possible. Trying to handle activating the adhesive and hanging the wallpaper yourself will be a slow and painstaking process and you’ll be more likely to make a mistake.
When you first start hanging your wallpaper, you should take it slow. It’s going to take awhile to do no matter how you approach it and any mistakes you make are only going to make it take longer. After awhile, you’ll fall into a good rhythm and it will become a breeze if you use the wallpaper tips outlined above.
