How to Work Safely

The following is a short discussion in regards to safety equipment you should use when making basic home improvements. This is only a basic intro to safety, and should only be taken as such. Always follow the directions on the safety equipment, and contact the manufacturer if you have questions.

Safety Protection

Eye protection is one of the most basic ingredients when it comes to good home improvement safety. Safety glasses are not the same as normal glasses as they have lenses that are tougher in comparison to normal glass, and that also provide a level of side protection as well.

Having the right hearing protection is also a relatively basic need. There are a lot of different types available that will provide you with adequate protection for your hearing. There are over the ear and in ear varieties that you can choose from, and they are all available in most basic home improvement stores. You should always be utilizing hearing protection when you are operating power equipment such as saws and routers.

Gloves are important for good safety, and there happen to be many different types that you can choose from. Leather gloves are going to protect your hands from sustaining any abuse while you are working. Gloves made from latex are going to be able to protect your hands from irritants such as paints and finishes. When you are using acids and other chemicals that are particularly powerful, you should make sure that you have chemical gloves to protect your hands.

Dust masks and respirators are not used quite as often as these other items, and yet they are just as vitally important to good health and safety. The purpose behind dust masks is to protect you from any particles that have gone airborne, such as sawdust for example. Respirators are especially necessary when you are using strippers, spray paints and other chemicals that are volatile in nature. One thing that you should know is that respirators are never a good substitute for good quality fresh air. Respirators do not supply you with oxygen. If you are using a product such as a stripper in an area that is well confined, you could end up seriously injuring yourself because some products such as these possess chemicals that are capable of displaying the oxygen in your environment, and since a respirator is not providing you with fresh oxygen, you could get very sick or hurt. You are also going to want to consider using a respirator in areas that are particularly dusty, or if the dust happens to be very fine, such as drywall sanding for example.

If you find that you have questions regarding a certain product, then you should take the time to contact the product manufacturer. If you find that you have questions regarding a certain situation or the law, then you should contact OSHA, or visit the OSHA website to have your questions answered.
